Rusa Deer Hunting at 777 Ranch

Rusa deer are arguably the least hunted deer species in the United States, but once you start hunting them, you will be hooked. The 777 Ranch is one of the few places where sportsmen can hunt the Rusa Deer in America. As there are no seasonal limitations on Rusa Deer hunting in Texas, you can hunt them all year round. However, if you are more into trophy hunting, it would be best to hunt them from December to April when their antlers are fully grown.

About the Rusa Deer

The Rusa Deer, which originates from Indonesia, is quite large. But what stands out about this species is its thick, coarse coat and its monster antlers which look too large for their body size. The antlers, which are present only in males, have three points on each of its antlers. Normally, the inner tine is longer than the outer one. The antlers are about 32+ inches. Rusa Deer have light hair tufts around their eyes and large ears. A stag’s height is about 42 inches at the shoulder, and it weighs about 270 pounds. Does are about 32 inches and weigh about 160 pounds. In the summer, the stags have a reddish-brown coat which changes to greyish-brown in the fall. On the other hand, it does have a yellowish-red coat in the summer which changes to greyish-red during the winter.

You are likely to find Rusa Deer in thick vegetation. They are quite aggressive during their rut period, which lasts from June to August. They have a very distinctive call and are rarely encountered alone. Therefore, be wary when you spot one as others could be close but hidden from your view. You will know that a Rusa deer has spotted you if it lays its antlers back against its neck and stares at you intensely. Rusa Deer mostly seek cover during the day. For this reason, it is advisable to hunt them either at night or at first light as they feed. The meat from this species is quite tasty and tender for such a large animal.

I toured the 777 this weekend and was extremely impressed at the job these guys have done there. The animals are fantastic with so many different species and such large groups it is truly amazing. It was like going back in time to Africa when animals were abundant. With the future of so many endangered species looking very bleak we should all be proud to have facilities like the 777 that will help preserve animal species for humans to enjoy well into the future. Thank you 777 for the wonderful animals that you guys raise insuring species survival for so many that are about to become extinct in their native homelands. Job well done!

Went to the 777 this weekend. Had an incredible time. We had Steven Rann as our guide. He was fantastic! Though the doves were not moving, he made the experience so enjoyable that we could have cared less about no dove. He took us around and showed us all of the incredible species that the 777 offers. The whole staffed catered to anything we need. They took such great care of use. We will definitely be back to chase some big game with Steven!
